“If you happen to have lived or live in Preston then you would know better than me how many stubborn cracks there are in that town. It has witnessed many events over the years from wars to happiness, from hot summers to dangerous floods, from prosperity to an industrial decline.

The first crack is the reason the settlement grew there, a huge brown almost stagnant crack slicing through the bedrock, from its source in the Pennines where the water was once pure, gradually becoming tainted with waste and manure and as it passes under London Road Bridge it is a foul cocktail that no one should dive into.”
